Description:

Europe, likely Italy or France, ca. mid-19th century CE; Cameos are Roman, ca. 1st century BCE – 2nd century CE). A refined and elegant necklace featuring two finely carved Roman cameos, each rendered in layered onyx and set in bespoke high-karat gold mounts. The cameos—depicting classical busts in profile, likely representing figures from Roman mythology or aristocracy—exemplify the technical mastery and aesthetic sensibility of Imperial Roman lapidaries. The delicate contrast between the white upper layer and dark base of the onyx provides a striking visual depth. The gold settings are minimalist yet sumptuous, framing the ancient portraits with a sleek, modern geometry that complements rather than competes with the classical forms. The cameos are suspended from heavy cylindrical bails on a hand-fabricated high-karat gold chain, composed of alternating oval and round links for both strength and fluidity. Size of chain: 15.5" L (39.4 cm). High karate gold, 74.1 dwt.

While the mounts are contemporary, their craftsmanship honors ancient goldsmithing traditions, making this piece a seamless fusion of antiquity and modern luxury. Timeless in appeal, this necklace is both a wearable work of art and a museum-quality example of ancient Roman gem carving.
