Description:

Central Europe, probably Switzerland, Lake Dweller culture, Neolithic to early Bronze Age, ca. 4300 to 800 BCE. A remarkable stone celt blade hafted into an antler socket. The antler, likely from an elk or moose, would have been mounted to a wooden handle, with the antler serving as shock absorption. Due to the presence of wood and adhesive residue in the socketing hole and the gap between the stone and antler, it is unclear whether the blade is original to this socket - both are ancient but may have been combined in modern times to form a complete piece. The Swiss Lake Dweller culture refers to prehistoric communities that lived in settlements, often on wooden stilts / pilings along lakeshores in what is now Switzerland and surrounding regions. Tools such as antler axes were often preserved by the watery environments where these people lived. Size: 5.5" L x 3" W (14 cm x 7.6 cm)
