Description:

Thessaly, Greece, ca. 6th to 4th Millennium BCE. This is a a hand-shaped terracotta idol head with a long neck and a triangular projection near the base. The climate in southern Europe at this time supported agriculture (as opposed to the colder climates of northern and central Europe), and we know that a Magna Mater cult with associated fertility rites sprang up alongside the new food technology. One of the best pieces of evidence for this are small pottery figures like this one that may have been carried by individuals or occupied household shrines. Comes with custom stand. Size: 1.6" W x 3.6" H (4.1 cm x 9.1 cm)
