Description:

Nepal. Mid. to early 20th century. Large ovoid drum still retaining the wood handle carved in similar form to a phurba. Richly carved with three faces, mid-section resembling a dorje with woven knots motifs, and a tapered triangular base with mythical beast head, and relief motifs including entwined snakes and lustral water vessel. The wood frame drum with intact skin secured by basketry on sides. Accompanied by a large wand drumstick of curved form of more recent manufacture and a smaller wood drumstick that is original to the drum. Rich red-brown burnished patina on handle. Minor basketry loss on side, small tear of drum skin at edge but still retains a fine resonating tone. Custom wall mount. Size: 28"H. x 13"W.
