Description:

Nepal, ca. 19th century. Carved large wooden ceremonial face mask, depicting the primary, revered, and feared demonic god in Nepalese (specifically Newar) folklore, is the Lakhey, particularly the Majipa Lakhey, known as the "demon among deities". Often considered a guardian deity, this demon is depicted with a red, fanged mask and dances during the Indra Jatra festival. Depicted with elongated ears, and very expressive facial features, open fanged, toothy mouth holding an object between his teeth, wide nose with large openwork flaring nostrils, high rounded cheeks, and bulging large round eyes and a third “all seeing eye” in the center of his forehead, large flame type eye brows. Wearing a head band decorated with five skulls, carved in the round. Red-brown painted face with black, white, and gold painted highlights. Carved attachment holes around the edges and top. An old red wax export seal on the interior. A very good old example. Size: 13”H x 9.75”W (33 x 24.8cm).
