Description:

Pre-Columbian, South America, northern Chile, Mapuche, ca. 1500 CE. A lovely pipe of a slender form, hand-carved from mottled dark-brown stone with lighter inclusions. The narrow composition features a boat-like body, a central receptacle surrounded by a thick rim, a petite carburetor on the end with a convex midsection, and a slender mouthpiece on the other, lattice-adorned end. Forms like this example with a central receptacle chamber were common in ritual pipe smoking in ancient Chile. Pipes were symbolic gifts given between different cultural groups throughout ancient Chile, and styles made in different regions have been found far from their origins. Size: 6.4" L x 2.6" W (16.3 cm x 6.6 cm); 1.8" H (4.6 cm) on included custom stand.
