Description:

Eastern Steppes, Southern Europe, ca. 9th - 11th century CE. Eastern Steppes / Southern Europe, Viking Age, ca. 9th–11th century CE. A hand-forged iron dagger reflecting the broad cultural reach of the Viking Age, featuring a wide curved blade and a simple band-type hilt guard. The flat, slightly curved hand grip terminates in a striking zoomorphic finial depicting an animal with a long snout — likely a wolf or steppe predator — reflecting the confluence of Norse and Eurasian Steppe artistic traditions that characterized the Viking expansion eastward.

The Vikings were not solely a North Atlantic phenomenon. Through their eastern expansion along the great river routes of Russia and Ukraine — the Varangian road — Norse warriors, traders, and settlers penetrated deep into the Eastern Steppes and Southern Europe, absorbing and exchanging artistic and cultural influences with the nomadic peoples they encountered, including the Khazars, Pechenegs, and Byzantines. Weapons produced in this cross-cultural zone often display a fascinating fusion of Norse form and Steppe animal-style ornament. Size: 11.3125” (28.7cm).

Provenance: Emily & Walter Mead Collection, Santa Fe, NM., active 1960’s - 1990’s. (Mead Paper Corporation family).
