Northwest Coast, British Columbia, Gary Rice (Coast Salish, b. 1939), ca. 1970s to 1990s. A hand-carved and beautifully painted wooden bird rattle, with Gary Rice's signature carved on the front of the handle. The rattle features a stylized bird on one side and an abstract visage with a hook nose/beak and a toothy grimace on the other. All is skillfully carved and embellished with a colorful palette of red, blue, green, black, and white. Size: 3.5" W x 15.25" H (8.9 cm x 38.7 cm); 16.25" H (41.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Gary Rice was born in a fishing village in Rivers Inlet on the central coast of British Columbia. A member of the Coast Salish Nation, Mr. Rice was a commercial fisherman and logger prior to becoming an artist. However, he suffered from physical injuries during the 1970s, and thereafter decided to pursue a career creating the artforms of his heritage, dedicating himself especially to wood carving.
