Description:

Native American, Northwest Coast, made by Ivan "Coyote" Otterlifter (Cherokee, lived from 1936-1999), ca. 1960s CE. A hand-carved wooden rattle in the form of an intimidating coyote lying in a prone position with delineated paws and leering ahead with large iridescent abalone shell inlaid eyes, raised pointy ears (separately carved), and an open mouth revealing gnashing teeth. In addition to the coyote's finely carved form and features, its face and ears are embellished with aqua blue, red, and black paint - and the tail which also serves as the rattle's handle is incised with repeated chevron motifs and wrapped with leather cord at its juncture with the rattle body. Size: 17.3" L x 3.1" W x 5.7" H (43.9 cm x 7.9 cm x 14.5 cm)

Interestingly, Ivan Otterlifter was a member of the Cherokee nation who made artwork in the Northwest Coast tradition.

Provenance: private Newport Beach, California, USA collection; purchased directly from Otterlifter ca. 1990
