Description:

First Nations / Native American, Eastern Canada / United States, Great Lakes region, Anishinaabe culture, Chippewa / Ojibwe, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A fine cedar wood cradleboard with double-curved bush bar at the top and a flat backboard painted with bright floral motifs and a heart shaped cutout. The front is fitted with two wooden side panels secured by leather straps to an embroidered cotton moss bag, which closes with a leather lace-up to hold the infant snugly; historically, moss was used inside for absorbency and warmth, and here a plaid wool blanket is placed within instead. A curved wooden bush bar arches across the top, so named because in heavily forested country it protects the baby from being bumped while traveling; a blanket can be draped over the bar to provide added shelter and shade from the sun. A long blue-and-yellow yarn carrying strap is tied to the verso with leather cords. Size: 30.75" L x 13.25" W x 15.5" H (78.1 cm x 33.7 cm x 39.4 cm)

Provenance: private Alamo, California, USA collection, before 2000; ex- J. Wilson collection
