Description:

Ancient Near East. Southern Mesopotamia. Old Babylonian, Isin-Larsa, ca. 2000 - 1700 B.C. Two different molded pottery relief decorated plaques, first depicting a king or a god carrying a mace, probably depicting Nergal, King of the Netherworld, the god of war, plagues, and death. Missing the lower portion of the plaque and a piece from the upper left corner. Together with a molded plaque depicting a double tiered altar with a king at the top, also probably Nergal, and at the bottom a standing figure flanked by four attendants. Intact. Both are nice examples. According to the Met. Museum: "Ceramic plaques of this sort were mass-produced from molds and represent a form of art available to a wide audience. They have been excavated in temples as well as household shrines in private homes. Their subject matter varies widely, including religious images, mythological and erotic scenes, and representations of rulers and gods." Size: 4-3/4"L. & 5-1/8"L.

Provenance: Private NYC. collection. Ex. Jack Guevrekian, Manhassat, NY., 1980's.
