Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Olmec, ca. 1000 to 400 BCE. A simple yet unusual pendant, hand-carved from a mottled green stone with chalky-white and light-brown inclusions. This form, known as a "duck head," exhibits two pairs of biconically-drilled suspension holes, the lateral holes resembling petite eyes. The head is blocky and roughly rectangular with two incised grooves curving on either side of the face. A broad, flat beak rests below, having been delineated using the meticulous string-cut technique, with the mouth opening being delineated in a similar fashion. A beautiful example of a more-uncommon pendant style! Size: 3" H (7.6 cm).

Provenance: ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired prior to 1970
