Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico and northern Central America, late Olmec/proto-Maya, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A fascinating contorted ceramic figure - probably meant to be an acrobat or performer - created from ceramic, with the characteristically jowly face of Olmec depictions. The figure's legs are twisted, one in front of the body and the other behind it, the face serious as if with great effort. Small drilled holes in the nipples and genital area may indicate where the figure had clothing made from organic material attached when originally made. A mesmerizing figure representing perhaps an acrobat or performer. Size: 5" W x 2.95" H (12.7 cm x 7.5 cm); 3.85" H (9.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
