Description:

Pre-Columbian, Las Bocas, Mexico, Olmec culture, ca. 1000-800 BCE. Unusual carved greenstone duck pendant/pectoral said to be from Las Bocas in the Mexican state of Puebla, a site associated with the Olmec culture - the Formative/Preclassic period civilization which dominated the region from approximately 1500 to 400 BCE. Carved on one side, flat on underside, drilled circular eyesSeemingly whimsical; however, Olmec statuettes representing figures donning duck masks suggest that Olmec shaman may have worn duck masks to assume an altar ego. Custom, museum-quality stand. A similar example was featured in a Sotheby's auction (11/20/1995) with an estimate of $2500-$3500. Examined and authenticated by Nick Stoetzer 3-1/4" L x 1-1/4" W
