Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Olmec culture, ca. 1100 - 550 BCE. The ancients of Mesoamerica seemed to relish in their representations of hunchbacks. The fine workmanship evident in this piece and others suggests that hunchbacks were regarded as special individuals of great import. Beginning with Olmec peoples, these individuals were thought to possess special abilities due to their physical anomalies. Scholars have concluded that the ancients believed their deformities were signs that these people were touched by the gods. This example shows remarkable detailing and fine technique not to mention the integral beauty of the stone itself. Custom, museum-quality stand. 8 cm high
