Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Olmec period, Tlatilco people, Tlapacoya, ca. 1250 to 800 BCE. A beautifully preserved figure of a standing woman, her arms raised and outstretched, her legs ending in gentle nubs. Her face is remarkably lifelike, with large eyes pierced for pupils, a small, snub-like nose, and a large-lipped mouth. She wears a helmet-like headdress decorated with an applied disc, perhaps meant to signify a clan or family. A tight-fitting skirt is her other item of clothing. Who does this figure represent? A real woman or an idealized figure? Looking at her expressive face, it is easy to imagine that the artist based her on someone he knew. Size: 2.85" W x 5.8" H (7.2 cm x 14.7 cm); 6.9" H (17.5 cm) on included custom stand.
