Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, late Olmec to Proto-Maya culture, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built pottery figure of a seated hunchback figure bearing an expressive countenance; a sizable conical protuberance emanates from behind his right shoulder. Traces of red pigment adorn the coiffure, face, hands, and feet. His hunchbacked state perhaps gave him a status above others since deformations were perceived as being granted special qualities and powers by the gods. Size: 2.7" W x 3.7" H (6.9 cm x 9.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-Marc Amiguet Schmitt estate, Amiguet's Ancient Art, Evansville, Indiana, USA, acquired prior to January 1, 2010
