Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, late Olmec or Proto-Mayan culture, ca. 500 BCE to 250 CE. A charming pottery figure depicting a corpulent seated female dwarf. She has pendulous breasts, hunched shoulders, and attenuated arms, and her enormous abdomen rests atop her out-turned feet. Her expressive visage boasts hallmark Olmecoid features and is composed of incised almond-shaped eyes with drilled pupils, an upturned nose above puffy lips, petite ears, and lightly-incised brows beneath a smooth forehead, all beneath a textured coiffure. Traces of red cinnabar are rubbed into some recessed areas along the front of her body. Size: 2.8" W x 3.2" H (7.1 cm x 8.1 cm).

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
