"Waiting" by Itzchak Tarkay (1935-2013), Israel, ca. 1999 CE. A beautiful signed mixed media watercolor entitled "Waiting" (1999) by the Israeli artist Itzchak Tarkay, a Holocaust survivor who was freed with his family from the Mauthausen Concentration Camp by the Allied forces when Itzchak was about 9 years old. While contemporary watercolors fall outside of our usual ancient fare, this piece is by an artist who we deem particularly important and displays strong influences of early modern art. Tarkay attended the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design as well as the Avni Institute of Art and Design were he fell under the influence of French Impressionism and Post Impressionism, especially the sophisticated color theory of Matisse and a penchant for line commanded by Toulouse Lautrec. Tarkay painted several compositions consisting of a single woman, fashionably dressed, sitting alone in a stylish interior that are entitled "Waiting." In this painting a lady sits upon a lavishly upholstered chair, dressed to the nines in a warm-toned blouse and skirt of orange, green, and yellow hues with a beautiful wide-brimmed autumnal orange hat upon her wavy brunette coiffure, her legs crossed and arms resting upon the arms of the chair, as she waits, perhaps for her love, in the otherwise empty room with a view through a window to the outside world.
