Western Europe, Italy, ca. late 16th to 17th century CE. A hand-carved wooden wall shelf of ornate form boasting sizable leaves flowing across the bottom point. Painted with vibrant yellow, green, red, and white pigments on plaster, the upper canopy bears hanging leaves around the periphery as well as flowers and a scallop shell on top. Shelves like this were used to hold elaborate religious figures, typically within a shrine or personal area of the home. Size: 7.5" L x 13.75" W x 33.5" H (19 cm x 34.9 cm x 85.1 cm)

Provenance: private Rancho Mirage, California, USA collection, by inheritance in 2020; ex-Dr. TDR Berreth, California, USA, acquired before 1982

Great remains of painted plaster throughout. Modern mounting wax residue on lower platform, and modern mounting screw just above lower platform.
