Description:

South America, Argentina / Chile, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. An antique South American yerba mate set, crafted in silver of approximately 84%-87% purity. The cup is adorned with repousse leaf motifs and is elevated on a drip tray with three claw-and-ball-style feet. Twin lion figures flank the rim, adding a heraldic presence. Resting inside is a silver bombilla decorated with applied ivy leaves that spiral along the shaft, culminating in a bulbous straining tip pierced with fine holes. Rich in sculptural detail and symbolic design, this set embodies the ceremonial elegance of traditional mate service. Yerba mate - an herbal infusion made from the leaves of the Ilex paraguariensis plant - is typically served in a gourd or metal vessel and sipped through a filtered straw called a bombilla. The practice is both a daily ritual and a communal act, symbolizing hospitality and shared experience. Size of vessel: 5.5" Diameter x 7" H (14 cm x 17.8 cm); silver quality: 84% to 87%; weight: 298.6 grams
