Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 8th to 10th century CE. A beautiful forged-iron horse bit comprised of two intricate cheek pieces, a pair of slender strips attached with a twisted ring, and a linked chain suspended via a pair of riveted loops. The shanks of the cheek panels boast curving, openwork triangular forms with three peripheral tabs, a petite loop, and several ringlets within the body, and the purchases on the front have rectangular strap loops and riveted chain loops. An intricate example from the ancient Vikings! Size: 6.2" L x 5.5" W x 2.75" H (15.7 cm x 14 cm x 7 cm); 4.1" H (10.4 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Loss to one ringlet inside one shank. Slight bending to overall form of most components, with minor nicks to cheek pieces and central bit strips, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits and patina throughout.
