Description:

Latin America, Mexico, ca. mid-20th century CE. An incredibly ornate candelabra in the form of the Tree of Life, a type of Mexican pottery sculpture traditional in central Mexico, sculpted from terracotta with wire supports and 5 glass sconces. The elaborate piece features a central seated skeleton or calavera engulfed in a labyrinthine forest of flowers, leaves, skulls and bones. Six more petite skeletons sit on the limbs of the largest, each of them dressed in a sombrero and holding either a saxophone, a jug, or a round object. Traditional Tree of Life sculptures depicted the Biblical story of creation and would act as an aid for teaching it to natives during the early colonial period. Size: 5.5" L x 15.5" W x 20.5" H (14 cm x 39.4 cm x 52.1 cm)

Provenance: private Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA collection, acquired between 1964 to mid-1990s
