Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Pachacamac culture, ca. 1000 CE. A lovely textile coca bag, splayed open to reveal the exterior motifs, comprised of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of espresso, crimson, forest-green, sunflower, and lavender. The bag displays a pair of vermilion registers filled with five highly-abstract sharks, each with parabolic bodies, forked tails, a conical dorsal fin, and a wide open mouth filled with fangs. Surrounding the central registers are solid panels of dark-brown pigment interspersed with thin bands of cream-hued thread. Sewn to a modern black textile panel atop a fabric display panel. Size (textile): 11.875" L x 10.75" W (30.2 cm x 27.3 cm); size (display panel): 22.5" L x 17.25" W (57.2 cm x 43.8 cm).
