Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Pachacamac culture, ca. 1000 CE. A lovely textile panel composed of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of crimson, sage, cobalt, marigold, cream, and coffee. The panel displays five rows of highly-abstract zoomorphic figures in avian and mammalian forms with one abstract lizard near the upper right corner. The animals in each row alternate between left-facing and right-facing, and each is presented within a smaller panel bearing a different color than the enclosed zoomorphic body. Sewn to a modern textile panel atop a black fabric display panel. Size (textile): 10.5" L x 8.9" W (26.7 cm x 22.6 cm); size (fabric): 24" L x 17.25" W (61 cm x 43.8 cm).

  • Condition: Textile is ancient, and modern fabric panel and display panel beneath are modern. Loosening and fraying to some interior and peripheral fibers, with light staining and fading to original pigmentation, and light creasing. Iconography is still visible and vivid.
