Lot 193
V. Neidlinger (American?). "San Gabriel Mission" oil on board, ca. early 20th century. Signed in lower right. A dynamic composition of an outdoor staircase of the Mission San Gabriel Arcangel in San Gabriel, California, by artist V. Neidlinger. The stunning piece shows a sandy ground lit up by the warm glow of the sun contrasted by the ascending staircase of an adobe missionary pueblo. A ray of light rises up the stairs and banister leading one's eye to the cloudy blue sky just above a swaying lone willow tree in the background. Mission San Gabriel was founded by the Spanish Empire on "The Feast of the Birth of Mary," September 8, 1771, as the fourth of what would become twenty-one Spanish missions in California. Named after the Archangel Gabriel, the Mission was often referred to as the "Godmother of the Pueblo of Los Angeles." Accompanied by photograph of Mission San Gabriel on verso. Size of painting: 24.25" W x 29.5" H (61.6 cm x 74.9 cm); of frame: 32" W x 37" H (81.3 cm x 94 cm)
