Description:

Egypt, Coptic period, ca. 4th to 6th century CE. A wonderful matched pair of carved bone combs - though one is larger than the other, both are delineated with nearly identical designs. The decorative 'heads' feature four openwork hemispheric forms at the corners, incised linear borders, and a central pointed star or abstract florette. The larger example also presents a pair of ridged triangular forms, one on each side flanking the central stellar/floral motif - and that ridged pattern also appears in the upper and lower borders. Lovely examples displaying delicate workmanship. Lucite stands. Size: larger comb measures 1.875" W x 2.875" H (4.8 cm x 7.3 cm); 3.25" H (8.3 cm) on stand

Provenance: private Moore collection, Denver, Colorado USA, acquired thirty years ago, purportedly from Sotheby's sale in the 1980s
