Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Apache people, ca late 19th to mid 20th century CE. Two skillfully crafted baskets, hand-woven from a wicker material, probably willow, and coated in pine pitch. The elongated ovoid form with a narrow neck and mouth is known as a "tus" and traditionally used for storing water. Two braided loop handles are attached to the front of the smaller basket, and a singular twisted handle is attached to the larger one. The tightly woven surface of the larger tus is coated with pine pitch to seal the gaps between the woven strands and make the vessel watertight. The smaller basket is not coated in pitch, and may have served a different storage purpose. Lucite stand for photography purposes only. Size larger basket: 5.41" W x 8.75" H (13.7 cm x 22.2 cm); smaller basket: 4.77" W x 7.5" H (12.1 cm x 19 cm)
