Western Europe, France, Neoclassical period, ca. 1870s CE. An opulent pair of brass lamps in the form of a satyr and satyress holding up a cornucopia surmounted by a false candlestick. Each fantastical figure sits on a plinth supported by 3 cloven hooves with a snake at their side, whose serpentine body forms a handle. They are additionally supported by a marble and brass stand. Size (both about the same): 4.9" L x 4.9" W x 13.9" H (12.4 cm x 12.4 cm x 35.3 cm)

Provenance: private Rancho Mirage, California, USA collection, by inheritance in 2020; ex-Dr. TDR Berreth, California, USA, acquired before 1982

  • Condition: Both function as lamps and take 15 watt candelabra bulbs (C7, E12). Slight slant to false candlesticks, and some nicks and abrasions throughout, commensurate with age. Otherwise, both are intact and excellent with nice patina.
