Description:

East Asia, China, Qing to Republic period, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A refined pair of Chinese blue and white porcelain vessels, comprising a bowl with figural decoration and a plate painted with floral motifs. The bowl is delicately potted with thin walls and painted in deep cobalt tones with a continuous figural scene, showing robed scholars seated beneath pine branches in a natural landscape. Such imagery reflects the enduring popularity of literati themes in late Qing and Republic period porcelain, celebrating scholarship, refinement, and harmony with nature. The matching plate is decorated to the interior with a profusion of scrolling lotus blossoms, their petals executed in soft washes of cobalt that contrast with the white ground. The lotus, long a Buddhist symbol of purity and transcendence, was a favored motif in Qing decorative arts, embodying auspicious wishes. Size of larger (floral dish): 5.6" W x 1.8" H (14.2 cm x 4.6 cm)

A simple blue line borders the rim, while the underside bears a stylized leaf mark in underglaze blue within the foot ring. Together, these two vessels exemplify the technical mastery and aesthetic elegance of late imperial and early modern Chinese porcelain. Their combination of figural and floral decoration highlights the range of themes embraced by Qing and Republic artisans, merging narrative storytelling with symbolic design.
