Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Atlantic Watershed, ca. 100 BCE to 500 CE; ca. 400 to 700 CE. A pair of Costa Rican pottery tripod vessels from the Atlantic Watershed tradition. The larger example, dating to Period IV to Period V (ca. 400 to 700 CE), stands on three hollow rattle legs and features the modeled head, arms, and tail of a monkey clinging to the vessel body. The smaller vessel, dating earlier to ca. 100 BCE to 500 CE, is more compact in form with a rounded body and three short legs. Tripod vessels such as these were common in ancient Costa Rican ceramics and were used in both domestic and ceremonial contexts. The animated monkey effigy and rattle legs of the larger vessel reflect the playful yet symbolic zoomorphic imagery characteristic of the Atlantic Watershed ceramic tradition. Size of larger (monkey): 6.1" L x 5.6" W x 6.9" H (15.5 cm x 14.2 cm x 17.5 cm)
