Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, Autlan region, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A charming pair of Colima Autlan pottery standing figures distinguished by their expressive faces and large circular hoop earrings. Each figure stands upright with bent arms resting at the abdomen, one holding a small rounded object while the other clasps the hands together. Their stylized features include wide eyes, small pursed mouths, and elaborate headdresses, while simple incised decoration marks the garments and belts. Figures of this type were produced in the Autlan area of Colima and were commonly placed in shaft tombs as part of funerary assemblages. Rendered in warm buff earthenware with traces of painted and incised detail, they reflect the lively sculptural tradition of West Mexican ceramics and the region's preference for animated human representations with distinctive jewelry and ornament. Size of larger (one not holding object): 3.2" W x 7.4" H (8.1 cm x 18.8 cm)

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection; ex-private Los Angeles, California, USA collection; ex-major gallery, Beverly Hills, California, USA, primarily acquired between 1985 and 2005
