Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Diquis, ca. 800 to 1500 CE; Peru, Ica culture, ca. 1100 to 1400 CE. A pair of painted pottery jars, each an eloquent expression of two distinct pre-Columbian traditions of Central and South America. The more petite of the two, from the Costa Rican Diquis culture, is a globular jar with a narrow neck and rounded lip, its surface enlivened with geometric motifs painted in black over a cream slip. Faint triangular and linear designs descend from the shoulder, bordered at mid-body with encircling bands of red and black. Such vessels, produced by the Diquis of southern Costa Rica, reveal a refined command of painted decoration, their abstract forms often thought to hold cosmological significance. The larger example belongs to the Ica culture of Peru's south coast, an heir to the Nasca tradition. Size of larger (Ica): 4.5" W x 3.8" H (11.4 cm x 9.7 cm)

Its broad, compressed body supports a short neck flanked by twin lug handles, while its surface is decorated in registers of alternating black and red motifs: curvilinear crescents arrayed in checkerboard fashion above a lower band of floral-like rosettes. The fine polychromy and the vessel's balanced silhouette reflect the sophisticated ceramic artistry that flourished in the Ica valleys between the 11th and 14th centuries CE. Together, these jars embody the shared pre-Columbian preoccupation with painted surface design as a vehicle of cultural identity, while offering a striking comparison between Central American and Andean ceramic traditions.

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection; side lugs: ex-Minerva Gallery, Florida, USA; red rim: ex-Caza Sikes, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, 2024
