Description:

Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Periods, ca. 712 to 30 BCE. Two beautiful sections of brightly-painted linen and gesso from a sarcophagus, decorated with fine geometric and figural motifs. The first panel displays several standing figures, one of which is perhaps the falcon-headed deity Ra, with several smaller shapes separating the rectangular sections in hues of crimson, aqua, and emerald. The second panel is comprised mostly of faded hieroglyphic sections, with notable symbols being the feather of Ma'at and a sickle, with the pictographs in black paint atop a red-orange ground. These sections may be from different sarcophagi based on their differing color schemes and orientations. Size of largest (hieroglyphs): 6" W x 6.5" H (15.2 cm x 16.5 cm).
