Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A wonderful pair of hand-built terracotta figures from the ancient Jalisco shaft-tomb culture. Both figures sit upon bent legs and exhibit characteristic "sheepface" qualities such as projecting noses, pointed ears with perforated earspools, coffee-bean-shaped eyes, and tall foreheads with intricate headbands. The male figure, shown with a shawl draped across one shoulder, appears to be holding an indiscernible object in his left hand. The female figure wears a striped skirt and holds a small bowl in one hand. White-painted embellishments complement the deep-red slip of both figures. Size of largest (female): 9.125" H (23.2 cm).

Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery
