Central Asia, Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 1st century CE. A lovely pair of stucco heads from ancient Gandhara: one of Buddha and the other of a noblewoman. Buddha displays a characteristic tranquil visage with idealized features and a wavy coiffure, while the lady's face is delineated in black and red pigments and crowned by a Greek-style coiffure. Size of larger (Buddha): 2.3" L x 2" W x 2.5" H (5.8 cm x 5.1 cm x 6.4 cm)

Provenance: private Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA collection, inherited via grandfather, who collected before 1980

  • Condition: Both are fragments from larger pieces with chips, nicks and abrasions. Buddha has lost ushnisha and proper right ear lobe. Both have liberal remaining detail and rich earthen deposits. Nice traces of pigment on noblewoman.
