Description:

Levant / Holyland, Hellenistic to Roman, ca. 3rd century BCE to 2nd century CE. A harmonious pair of ancient terracotta jars, each formed in utilitarian fashion yet carrying the quiet dignity of vessels once essential to daily life. The larger jar displays a full, globular body tapering to a narrow foot, with a rolled disk rim and a single loop handle rising from the shoulder to the neck. Its rounded form suggests use as a household storage jug, well-suited for oil or wine. The smaller, more slender vessel narrows to a pointed base, its long neck surmounted by a slightly flared rim and fitted with a modest strap handle. Such amphoriskoi or miniature amphorae were commonly used to store perfumed oils or other precious liquids, designed to rest in stands or baskets. Both jars retain their pale buff surfaces with scattered mineral inclusions and earthen deposits from long burial. Size of larger (footed jar): 5.3" Diameter x 8.8" H (13.5 cm x 22.4 cm)

Their forms exemplify the transition from the elegant ceramic traditions of the Hellenistic world to the pragmatic vessels of Roman daily use. Together they illustrate the continuity of ceramic production across centuries in the Eastern Mediterranean, where pottery of this type accompanied both the commerce and the domestic rituals of ancient life.
