Description:

Indonesia, Bali or Java, 20th century CE. This is a pair of hand carved wooden masks in the style of Topeng. One is painted blue with serious, downturned lips and wide eyes; the other is a creamy white, with a single tooth and upturned lips. Masks like these are worn during the dramatic dances enacted in Bali and to a lesser extent Java that depict traditional stories of kings, princes, heroes, and myths. Based on the color of the masks, this green one is probably meant to depict Prince Panji; his story is based on his romance with Princess Kirana and his attempts to find her after she is kidnapped. The white one is may depict King Klana, who is strong, with an energetic expression and whose nobility is reflected from the white paint on his mask. Size of one (they are similar in size): 6.25" W x 7.75" H (15.9 cm x 19.7 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Nikotovich collection acquired before 1980
