Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A wonderful pair of red-slipped terracotta bichrome figures from the Jalisco shaft-tomb culture. First is a kneeling mother holding her infant in her arms while it nurses from her prominent breasts. Her shoulders are adorned with several disc-shaped pads, and her bulging abdomen is indicative that she is again expecting. She also displays white designs on her legs, as well as a painted necklace. A second maternal figure is seated with a skirt replete with cream-painted details, and embraces her child gently in her lengthy stylized arms. Her painted pectoral lays upon her pronounced breasts. Each figure has characteristic 'sheepface' qualities such as conical noses, upturned ears, disc-shaped eyes with painted pupils, large headdresses with intricate headbands, and loving smiles. Size (smaller): 7.25" H (18.4 cm); Size (larger): 10.25" H (26 cm).

- Condition: Both figures repaired from multiple pieces with some overpainting atop crack lines. Each item has expected age-commensurate surface wear, fading and loss to red and white details, minor losses to extremities and along crack lines, with some orange discoloration and earthen and mineral deposits throughout.
