Description:

East Asia, Japan, Meiji Period, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful pair of hand-carved architectural transoms (ranma), each rendered in rich hardwood with exceptional depth and craftsmanship. These openwork panels were traditionally set above sliding doors or partitions to allow light and air to flow through while adding artistry to an interior. One panel presents an animated scene of cranes or herons among blossoming lotus lilies, and the second panel depicts a lively arrangement of birds in flight amidst blooming peonies, their wings spread wide as they weave through lush foliage. Each composition is deeply carved with layered relief, bringing an elegant sense of life and dimension. They are striking both as historical architectural elements and as standalone decorative art pieces ready to be showcased in a modern setting. Size of larger panel: 47" L x 14.5" W (119.4 cm x 36.8 cm)

Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection, acquired in the 1960's
