Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mesoamerica, Mexico, Chontal culture, ca. 500 BCE to 500 CE. A modest and appealing lot of two miniature Chontal stone bowls or mortars, carved from dense stone with rounded profiles and softly finished interiors. One example displays scattered dark mineral inclusions or spotting across the surface, creating a naturally decorative effect, while the other is more uniform in tone, emphasizing form and material. Bowls of this type were likely used for preparing pigments, ritual substances, or small offerings, their reduced scale suggesting personal or ceremonial use rather than domestic utility. Together, they offer a quiet study in Chontal stoneworking traditions, where simplicity and material presence carry enduring appeal. Size of larger: 3.1" W x 1.5" H (7.9 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000
