Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A lovely pair of terracotta items from the Nayarit shaft-tomb culture. First is a tripod bowl with three nubbin-shaped legs, smooth exterior walls, a shallow interior cavity, and a rolled rim. The interior of the bowl has linear, circular, and zigzag motifs painted in deep-red atop a buff surface. The second item is a figural jar with a round but stable base, spherical body, a narrow neck with an abstracted human head, a wide mouth, and a rolled rim. The human depiction has a protruding nose, slit-shaped eyes, a circular mouth, and tab-shaped ears. The majority of the upper body is painted in a deep-red hue atop a buff surface, and creamy white linear and zigzag details adorn the surface. A stupendous pair! Size (bowl): 6.25" W x 2.625" H (15.9 cm x 6.7 cm); size (figural jar): 4" W x 5.25" H (10.2 cm x 13.3 cm).
