Ancient Near East, Holy Land, late Roman to Byzantine period, ca. 3rd to 6th century CE. Two terracotta oil lamps, each elegantly shaped in the classic teardrop form and embellished with radiating grooves reminiscent of the light they once emitted. The larger example bears finely incised decoration and an elongated nozzle, while the more petite presents a rounded body with a cross-impressed base, evoking the growing Christian symbolism of the era. Fired in warm reddish hues, these vessels once held olive oil to brighten domestic interiors and sacred spaces alike, their forms uniting practical craftsmanship with spiritual expression. - Condition: Larger lamp remains fully intact with only minor edge chips, while the smaller example shows a professional restoration along a central breakline, with some loss to the spout. Both exhibit surface patina and light earthen encrustations consistent with age. Nice remains of impressed decoration.
