Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A delicate pair of free-blown Roman glass vessels, each once used for the storage of precious oils, perfumes, or cosmetics. The taller example is a slender unguentarium with a long cylindrical neck and a flaring disk rim balanced atop a broad, flattened base. Its elegant proportions reflect the Roman mastery of glassblowing, which revolutionized ancient vessel production beginning in the 1st century BCE. The second vessel is a small pear-shaped flask with a rounded body tapering to a narrow cylindrical neck and an everted rim. Such flasks were favored for everyday use and were often placed in tombs as grave offerings, symbolizing both luxury and the continuity of daily practices in the afterlife. Size of larger: 1.7" Diameter x 6.7" H (4.3 cm x 17 cm)

Together, these vessels illustrate the variety and refinement of Roman glasswork, prized not only for its utility but also for its beauty. Their simple yet graceful forms embody the Roman aesthetic of combining functionality with elegance, and their survival across two millennia speaks to the durability of ancient craftsmanship.
