Lot 125
Greece, Thrace, Leaded Bronze, ca. 5th to 3rd century BCE; Roman, Bronze, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A pair of ancient bracelets, each shaped by a different world yet harmonizing in their quiet simplicity. The larger ring belongs to Thrace, its leaded bronze curved in a confident, open arc. At each terminal, the metalworker carved neat incised designs - small, deliberate marks that give voice to the artisan's touch. The bracelet's sturdy form and subtle decoration reflect a Thracian aesthetic that favored clarity of line over lavish display, letting the shape itself carry its meaning. Beside it rests a more petite Roman bracelet, fashioned centuries later but echoing the same love of clean geometry. Its bronze band is stamped along the exterior with a repeating circular motif, a rhythmic pattern that catches the light even beneath its ancient patina. At the front, a small knotted fastening remains, a practical and decorative feature that once tightened around the wearer's wrist. Size of larger (Thracian): 3.8" Diameter (9.7 cm)
Together, the two objects trace a quiet arc across time - the Thracian piece grounded in the early Iron Age traditions of the Balkans, the Roman example shaped in a world of expanded trade, cosmopolitan tastes, and standardized motifs. Each holds its own history of adornment and identity, and when viewed side by side, they map a shared human instinct to ornament the body with forms that outlast the centuries.
