Description:

Central Asia, Tibet or Himalayan region, Tibetan culture, ca. late 19th to 20th century CE. A visually commanding pair of Tibetan carved wood relief panels, each elongated in form and richly decorated with scrolling, cloud-like motifs that ripple across a deep red ground. The surfaces retain layered polychrome and natural wear, lending the panels a sense of long devotional life and architectural purpose. One panel centers on a wrathful deity emerging from swirling clouds, the face fierce and animated, with two outstretched hands grasping the surrounding forms. Such imagery is associated with protective deities in Tibetan Buddhism, figures meant to ward off negative forces and guard sacred spaces. The companion panel features a stylized lotus blossom framed by the same rolling cloud motifs, a symbol of purity, enlightenment, and spiritual awakening rising above the material world. Size of : 20.4" L x 4.5" W (51.8 cm x 11.4 cm)

Carved in confident relief with rhythmic lines and softened edges, the panels were likely intended as architectural elements, possibly from a shrine, door surround, or interior temple furnishing. Together, they form a balanced visual and symbolic pairing, where ferocity and serenity coexist, embodying the Tibetan Buddhist understanding that wisdom and protection arise from the same cosmic source.
