Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A pair of twin Ere Ibeji figures, the Igbomina type, hand carved to represent deceased twins and adorned with beaded necklaces, the female with a beaded belt and metal bracelet as well, incised markings representing scarification and other bodily details, and organic pigments. According to the Yoruba, twin effigies like the ones featured here are believed to influence the daily lives of family members. As such, they are traditionally honored with prayers and libations. Size: male figure measures 11.5" H (29.2 cm); female measures 11" H (28 cm)

Just to provide a bit more context, Ibeji is an orisha, a holy spirit in the Yoruba religion. Twins are thought to possess magical properties in the Yoruba culture, and are protected by the sacred deity Shango. When a twin passes away, this is believed to bring on bad luck for the parents, families and connected communities.
