Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Zapotec culture, ca. 300 to 700 CE. A set of two, sweet and near petite, greyware figural whistles with red and black detailing, depicting a pair of warriors standing at the ready, one donning a rounded cap-like headdress or coiffure, pierced ears presumably for the suspension of ornaments, and a round labret projecting from his lips, holding a round shield. The other warrior wears a more angular headdress, large round ear ornaments, a similar labret, and holds a rectangular shield. Both figures are nicely painted in black and red on the grey ground with bold eyes and striations/geometrics adorning their bodies and shields. Beyond their endearing forms, the whistles work very well! Size: taller measures 4.5" H (11.4 cm)

Provenance: Ex- Collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, CA
