Central Asia, Tibet, ca. mid-20th century CE. A matching pair of brass dungchen (dung chen), long ritual trumpets constructed in four sections, with the upper three sliding neatly into the flared bell base for transport. The mouthpiece and upper shaft are left plain, while the lower sections are richly chased and repousse with repeating foliate and floral motifs. Dungchen are traditionally played in pairs or larger ensembles during Buddhist ceremonies, producing deep, resonant tones meant to evoke the voice of the Dharma. During performance, the instruments are typically held horizontally with the bell resting on the ground or supported by a stand, emphasizing both their scale and ritual presence.
