Description:

Western Europe, Northern France, Saint-Acheul, Paleolithic, Acheulean period, ca. 1,000,000 to 200,000 years ago. An almond-shaped hand axe of classic 'coup de poing' form, knapped from flint with bifacial flaking that creates a balanced, pointed silhouette. The term coup de poing, French for 'fist strike,' refers to these handheld tools designed to be gripped directly in the palm and used for cutting, chopping, scraping, and general processing tasks. An ink inscription on the surface identifys the find site as Saint-Acheul, along with the term coup de poing and a catalog number. Acheulean hand axes represent one of the earliest and longest-lasting tool traditions created by hominin species, with use spanning well over a million years. This example shows purposeful shaping with broad flake scars and a tapered working edge, while portions of the cortex remain visible. Size: 4.75" L x 2.4" W (12.1 cm x 6.1 cm)
